The 23rd COMESA (Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa) Summit of Heads of State and Government took place in Bujumbura, Burundi, from October 28 to 31, 2024, celebrating COMESA’s 30th anniversary. Alongside this pivotal gathering, a trade expo showcased African businesses, highlighting the continent’s economic potential. Among the attendees was Mohamed Anasra, founder of Comoros Moringa, who brought forward her vision for greater collaboration in African trade and the importance of showcasing local products.
About Mohamed Anasra and Comoros Moringa
Hailing from the Comoros, Mohamed Anasra established Comoros Moringa to promote natural, moringa-based products, including foods and cosmetics. Her mission is to leverage the power of moringa and raise awareness of the resources and agricultural potential of the Comoros Islands, while contributing to sustainable economic growth.
At the COMESA expo, Anasra presented Comorian products and connected with other African entrepreneurs, fostering networking and future collaboration opportunities. “This event is a fantastic opportunity to showcase what we have in the Comoros and build valuable partnerships,” she said.
The COMESA Expo: Advancing Intra-African Trade and Collaboration
The COMESA expo, running concurrently with the summit, provided a platform for African entrepreneurs to discuss trade, share ideas, and promote products. Anasra highlighted that this networking is essential for strengthening African economies. She also emphasized that discovering Burundi and its business environment was valuable in expanding her understanding of potential partnerships in Africa.
Addressing Challenges in African Trade
Despite the excitement surrounding African business, Anasra identified barriers in intra-African trade, including restrictive local policies that often hinder exports and trade across borders. “These restrictions slow down the growth we need. It’s vital that African nations work together to ease these barriers,” she noted. Her appeal calls for collective action among African governments to facilitate smoother trade across the continent.
A Call for Unity and Economic Resilience in Africa
Anasra’s message to African countries is one of unity and resilience, urging African nations to build a prosperous future through collaboration. “It’s time for Africa to prioritize our own growth and support each other. Only by working together can we reach new heights,” she said.
